About Lakefront & View Clearing
View clearing is selective tree work with one purpose: letting you see out. Instead of cutting everything between the house and the water, we remove specific limbs and a few chosen trees to open a window through the canopy. Common methods include raising the crown so you can look beneath it, thinning so the view filters through the branches, and reducing a few tall trees that block the line of sight. Homeowners usually call when a view they once enjoyed has slowly grown in, when they buy a lake or ridge lot, or before a new deck, porch or wall of windows goes in.
View clearing around Kingsport takes in some of the best scenery in Northeast Tennessee. Lots near Fort Patrick Henry Lake and Warriors' Path State Park, homes above the South Fork Holston River and properties on Boone Lake south of town all have water worth seeing. On the ridges, the view may stretch toward Bays Mountain, Holston Mountain or Clinch Mountain in Virginia. Many of these lots are steep, wooded with tulip poplar, oak, eastern white pine and hemlock, and built on shallow soil, so every tree we take out changes how the slope holds together. We plan each cut with that in mind.
We begin every job from the spot where you want to enjoy the view, whether that is the deck, the living room window or the end of the dock. From there we mark the limbs and trees that are actually in the way and walk the plan with you before any cutting starts. On steep ground our crew climbs and lowers limbs on ropes so they do not crash down the bank or onto the dock. We favor limbing and thinning over removal, leave stumps and roots in place on slopes to hold the soil, and keep low shrubs along the water as a natural buffer against erosion.
Shoreline land on TVA lakes like Fort Patrick Henry and Boone often comes with rules about what can be cut, and part of what looks like your yard may belong to TVA. Before any work near the water, check with TVA and, if you have one, your HOA, since permission may be needed. We will plan the work around whatever limits apply and keep it inside them. Call us to set up an estimate for view clearing in Kingsport, and we will meet you on site, stand where you stand and look at the view you have in mind.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need permission to clear trees on my lake lot?
You may. Much of the shoreline on TVA reservoirs, including Fort Patrick Henry Lake and Boone Lake, involves TVA land or TVA rules on vegetation near the water, and cutting without approval can cause trouble for the property owner. Homeowner associations may have rules of their own as well. We recommend checking with TVA and any HOA before work begins, and we will plan the job around whatever approval you receive.
Will view clearing hurt my trees?
Done properly, no. We cut limbs back to the branch collar, avoid taking too much from any one crown and never top trees, since topping leaves weak, bushy regrowth that blocks the view again before long. Thinning and raising the canopy are gentle on a healthy tree. If a tree in the sight line is already declining, we may suggest removing it rather than pruning it heavily.
How long will the view stay open?
That depends on the species and how much was cut. Fast growers like tulip poplar, maple and sweetgum fill gaps sooner than oaks or white pines. Heavy cuts tend to trigger a flush of sprouts, so light, repeated work usually keeps a view open longer than one big clearing. Most views need some upkeep over the years, and we can come back to maintain the window you like.
Can you open a view without removing whole trees?
In many cases, yes. Raising the lower canopy, thinning interior branches and shortening a few limbs that cross the sight line can open a surprising view with no full removals at all. When a single tree truly blocks the view, we will show you why and talk through the choices, such as taking it down and leaving the stump to help hold the bank, before making that cut.
